Cmdr. Mays began his service as a law enforcement officer in May 1975 as a Patrol Officer.  In 1977 he was seriously injured when shot in the line of duty. He continued to work at the Police Dept. until November 1978 when he left to continue his service at the Madison County Sheriff's Dept. and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.  

During his break in service,  he completed Law School and successfully challenged the Tennessee Bar Exam.  In November 1990 he returned to the Jackson Police Department as the first full time Legal Advisor.  

During the next 18 years of service he served as the Legal Advisor and was assigned to command the Criminal Investigation Division in July 1992 and in July 1998 he was reassigned to the patrol division where he remained until the his retirement in Sept 2008.  He was also instrumental in the start-up of the Aviation Unit where he served as the Unit Commander, the first licensed pilot and later as the first licensed instructor pilot.
