Edwin B. Alderson began his career with the Police Department on January 15, 1946 upon completing his military service.  He served in World War II with the Army Air Corps  He had two years overseas service with the 770th Bomb Squadron (B-29's) in the South Pacific and the China, Burma, India Theater.  He was discharged witht he rank of Tech Sergeant.

Chief Alderson was a graduate of the 59th Sesson of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Police Academy in Washington, D.C. and attended various other law enforcement related schools.

Chief Alderson implemented serveral metro units with the Madison County Sheriff's office and put in place a T.A.C.T. unit, regarded as one of the best in the country.  Chief Alderson's training program was very well respected among his peers and the Jackson Police Department became the first fully accredited police department in Tennessee due to the diligent efforts of Chief Alderson.  Mayor Charles Farmer proclaimed July 14, 1989 as Chief Ed Alderson Day.   

Chief Alderson held various affiliations, professionally and personally.  He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Charles W. Wooten Lodge #7; Tennessee Peace Officers Association, Tennessee and Mississippi Peace Officers Associations; Tennessee Associations of Chiefs of Police; Veteran of Foreigh Wars; and served two years as a member of the Statewide Training and Training Standards Committee for Police Officers.  He was a member of Highland Park Baptist church, serving as an active Deacon and taught Men's Bible Class.

Chief Alderson was a life-long resident of Jackson, graduating from Jackson High School.  He was a husband, father of two and grandfather.
