James Matlock began his law enforcement career with the Jackson Police Department on November 1,  1945.  He was hired as a patrol officer and was assigned to the Patrol Division.  

Officer Matlock was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant around 1954.  Then later he was promoted to Lieutenant on January 1,  1960 and then to Captain on March 1, 1969.  Captain Matlock spent most of his career attached to the Patrol Division until somewhere around July, 1985 where he was transferred to the Warrants and Communications Division.   Captain Matlock received several letters of apprecation and commendation for his service to the community.

Captain James W. Matlock was later promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief on March 26, 1986.  Deputy Chief Matlock retired from the Jackson Police Department on May 15, 1986 as Deputy Chief.
