Robert Stedman began his career with the Jackson Police Department on March 18, 1936. He worked as a patrolman and was transferred to the postition of Desk Sergeant. In September of 1956 he was promoted to Lieutenant where he worked until August 15, 1959 when he was promoted to Assistant Chief of Police.

Assistant Chief Robert S. Stedman retired from the Police Department on April 1, 1968 after  32 years of service with the department.  He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, a charter member for the Fraternal Order of Police and a charter member of the Jackson Police Association.
