William "Bill" Dewitt Heidelberg began his career in law enforcement at the Jackson Police Department on June 16, 1966.  He was assigned as a Patrol Officer to the Patrol Division.  Then in June 1971, Officer Heidelberg was transferred to the Juvenile Division as a Juvenile Officer.   Officer Heidelberg was later promoted to Sergeant in July 1973 and then to Lieutenant in October 1978 while still in the Juvenile Division.  

On August 23, 1989, Lt. Heidelberg was transferred from the Juvenile Division to the Criminal Investigtion Division in charge of the Property Crimes Unit where he remained until he retired on February 26, 1999.  During his tenure, Lt. Heidelberg was nominated and elected Employee of the Month in October, 1997.  He also received numerous letters of commendation.
