Woodrow Bruce Smith went to work for the City of Jackson on August 1, 1974 working at the Jackson Fire Department.  Later he was physically transferred to the Jackson Police Department to be in charge of the Jackson/Madison County Metro Arson Division from October 1980 until July 1, 1986 while still attached to JFD.  Smith worked under the direction of Captain Robert Dailey while working with the Metro Arson Division.  He attended the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy - Basic Recruit School and completed it in November 1980.

In August 1989, Smith was transferred from the Jackson Fire Department to the Jackson Police Department and assigned as a Lieutenant in the Criminal Investigation Division in charge of the Auto Theft Unit that was later called the Organized Crime Unit and then went back to being referred to as the Auto Theft Unit.  

During his career, Bruce Smith received several personnal letters of commendation.  He was also nominated and elected the Employee of the Month in December, 2002.  Bruce Smith remained in charge of the Auto Theft Unit until his retirement on June 17, 2006 at the rank of Lieutenant.
