Ronald Stephen "Steve" Overton began his law enforcement career as a patrolman in 1984.  Shortly after completing his two-year probationary period, he was transferred to the Tactical Unit.  Working in this unit, he began his progression through the ranks to Sergeant in 1989 and Lieutenant in 1996, during which times he was the commanding officer of the unit.  In 1999, he was transferred to the Patrol Division as a Patrol District Commander.  His final progression came in 2010 when he was promoted to the rank of Captain in the Patrol Division, serving as Commander of the North District.

Captain Overton was afforded numerous training opportunities within the Tactical Unit.  This training mainly dealt with all aspects of the Tact Unit such as handgun and weapon training, building clearing, counter-terrorism and many more.  Argueably his most notable training was his attendance and completion of the School of Police Staff and command at the Traffic Institute of Northwestern University on November 8, 1996.

Captain Overton received numerous awards during his career.  Most notable are FOP Officer of the Month in February, 1989; Jackson Jaycees' City Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 1994; JPD Employee of the Month, April 1997; JPD Employee of the Year, December 1997;  and the Jackson Leadership Council Service Award in 1999.  He also received numerous letters of commendations from his superiors and the citizens and businesses of the City of Jackson.
