Officer Ken Haney began his career in law enforcement with the Jackson Police Department on May 5, 1980.  He attended and satisfactorily completed the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy - Basic Recruit School to become a certified officer on August 22, 1980.

In addition to Officer Haney's regular duties he also completed training in specialized areas such as: Storm Spotter, Defensive Driving, Intoximeter Operator, Traffic Accident Investigation, Terrorism Awareness, Gang Awareness and Field Training Officer.

Officer Haney spent much of his time as a Field Training Officer taking inexperienced recruits and newly hired sworn officers who transferred from other agencies through their twenty - six week training program.  Officer Haney also taught the new recruits and newly hired sworn officers  different courses during their class portion of the Field Training Program.

During his career Officer Haney became one of the Jackson Police Department's most highly decorated and recognized officers.  Officer Haney received two Medals of Valor, the Life-Saving Medal and the Medal of Merit.  He was also recognized as Officer of the Month in November 1988, Employee of the Month in August 2005, Officer of the Year in 2005 and he was awarded a Silver Star for Bravery from American Police Hall of Fame.

The nomination recommending Officer Ken Haney as the Employee of the Month in August, 2004 stated that "...he is one who is very professional in his dealings with the public, an excellent communicator, and very precise.  It is his preciseness that played a very important role in the arrest of a suspect on June 17, 2004.  He is sure to get a clear understanding of his assignment and does a thorough job with no bias."

The Citation presented to Officer Haney when he was awarded one of the Medals of Valor stated that on June 29, 1999, Officer Haney arrived on the scene of an armed man and placed himself in a position that was tactically dangerous to him, but he did so to protect the civilians in the store.  Officer Haney placed himself in immediate danger to effect an arrest without resorting to the use of lethal force.

Then the Citation presented to Officer Haney when he was awarded the Lifesaving Medal stated that on February 24, 2004, Officer Ken Haney's quick and decisive actions helped save the life of a domestic violence victim who had been struck with a hatchet.  Officer Haney radioed for a ambulance and administered first aid by applying a tourniquet to help control the victim's arterial bleeding.  The victim's injury was so severe that surgery was required to treat the wound.

The second Citation for Medal of Valor bestowed upon Officer Haney stated that on June 17, 2004, Officer Haney initiated a  vehicle pursuit of a armed robber who had fired shots in the Old Hickory Mall.  During the high speed pursuit, the suspect intentionally rammed two police cars.  The pursuit was terminated when the suspect wrecked his vehicle and then opened fire with his weapon mortally wounding Sergeant Andy Bailey.  As the suspect fled on foot, Officer Haney gave chase and when the armed suspect turned toward Officer Haney, he opened fire, the suspect was hit and arrested ending the rampage that had cost an officer his life.

Officer Ken Haney has numerous other accolades in the form of personal commendation letters which were too many to count.  Officer Haney left the Jackson Police Department in September 2010 and went to Afghanistan as an International Police Trainer, embedded with the United States Army.  During his mission, Officer Haney recieved the NATO/ISAF Medal for Afghanistan along with numerous other commendation and accolades.
