Captain Barney Crews was employed with the Jackson Police Department from March 1968 until March 1, 1993.  As he progressed through the ranks at the Jackson Police Department, Captain Crews served as the Director of Community Relations and was promoted in September 1970 to the rank of Sergeant and then in March 1974 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.  These two promotions came about while Captain Crews was assigned to Community Relations and Crime Prevention. 

In April 1980,  Crews was promoted to Captain over the Planning and Development, as well as Training, while also serving as the Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Police.  In December 1986,  Captain Crews was appointed as the department Accreditation Manager and in July 1989, the Jackson Police Department completed the accreditation process and became the first law enforcement agency in Tennessee to receive this national award.  On March 1, 1993 Captain Barney Crews retired as Captain of Administration. 

During his tenure with the Jackson Police Department, Captain Crews also served in the Tennessee Army National Guard.  After serving  30 years and 6 months Crews retired in 2006 at the rank of Colonel from National Guard. 

Captain Crews was a 1991 graduate of the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Jackson.  He was also an Ambassador with the Red Coats, another Chamber of Commerce sponsored program, from 1992 until 2004.  In 1973, the Chamber of Commerce recognized Captain Barney Crews by awarding him the City Maker Award.  He was a chapter member and also served as Chairman of the American Red Cross from 1979 until 1981.  In 1976, Captain Crews join the Bicentennial Exchange Club and is still a chapter member of this organization.  Captain Crews has served as the President of the Exchange Club five seperate years.  Captain Barney Crews is also a long time member of the Highland Park Baptist Church, where he has served as a Sunday School Teacher for an Adult Couples Class since 1986. 

Captain Crews now enjoys many hobbies such as camping and gardening.  He also enjoys working on wood crafting projects for his family and friends.
