Officer George James Steele was hired by the Jackson Police Department in 1979.  He graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and was assigned to the Patrol Division.
Officer Steele was transferred from the Patrol Division in to Communication in 1988. He was later transferred back into the Patrol Division in 1989. Officer Steele served the remainder of his time in the Warrants Division at the Police Department, serving warrant and transporting inmates. He also did court security.

During his career he received certified training in Severe Storm Spotting and Defensive Driving.  Officer Steele received a Certificate of Appreciation for his work for the humanitarian spirit and devoted service rendered to the Black Community of Jackson Madison County and also the Helping Hand Organization.  

Prior to Officer Steele becoming employeed with the City of Jackson, he served in the United States Army. During his service at the Jackson Police Department, Officer Steele received several Letters of Appreciation and Letters of Commendation. In 1991 Officer George Steele received the Police Purple Heart award after having suffered a gunshot wound while trying to place two burglars into custody. After his injury, Officer Steele became a strong advocate for great right for victims of crimes and testified before Tennessee legislators in opposition of reduced sentencing for convicted criminals.

Officer George James Steele retired from the Jackson Police Department April 18, 2008.
