Edwin L. McPherson III began service with the Jackson Police Department on October 9th, 1978 when he was assigned to the Patrol Division.  He served as a patrolman until December 01, 1980 when he was assigned to serve as an investigator in the Juvenile Division, where he served until his being assigned to the Metro Narcotics Division as an investigator on July 15th 1987.  He worked there until his promotion to the rank of sergeant and subsequent transfer to Patrol Division where he was assigned to serve as a patrol sergeant.  Sergeant McPherson was assigned to serve as member of the Criminal Investigation Division on July 8th, 1982 there on February 10th, 1992 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.  Lieutenant McPherson served as commander of the Preliminary Investigative Activity Unit for the remainder of his career.  During a career that spanned 27 years, 2 months, and 5 days Edwin L. McPherson III found himself being assigned to serve in many capacities in addition to his primary duties to include, hostage negotiator, firearms instructor, TIBRS Coordinator and instructor. His service as Logistics Officer during the aftermath of two devastating tornadoes was in the highest tradition of the Jackson Police Department.  He always served where ever and whenever called to do so.  His dedication to the Jackson Police Department is meritorious.
