Lieutenant Varnell Womack was hired by the Jackson Police Department in 1971.  He graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and was assigned to the Patrol Division.
Lieutenant Womack transferred to the Traffic Division in 1974 as a Patrolman.  He later transferred back the Patrol Division in 1977. In 1980, Womack was promoted to Corporal while still in the Patrol Division. He later promoted to Sergeant in 1981. Womack was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1986.
During his career he has served on several Community Boards.  He has received training in Drug Enforcement, Hostage Negotiations, Police Supervisor, Middle Management and Public Relations. Lieutenant Womack served in the United States Army. He is a graduate of West Senior High School. He was a member of Blairs Chapel CME Board of Trustees and Ushers. Womack was also a member of the NAACP and the Tennessee and Mississippi Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association.   
Varnell Womack retired from the Jackson Police Department December 12, 2000.
