James William Deberry, Jr. was hired by the Jackson Police Department in 1977.  He graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and was assigned to the Patrol Division.

In July 1986, Officer Deberry was tranferred to the Motorcycle Unit of the Patrol Division.  Then in December 1990, Deberry was promoted to Investigator and transferred the Police Drug Control Division. In 1992, Officer Deberry was transferred back into the Patrol Division as the Tel-a-serve Officer.

During his career Officer Deberry received training in Narcotics and Dangerous School Drug, Basis Intelligent Management, Education Awareness in Narcotics Enforcement and Laboratory Investigations. He was certified in High Risk Entry Techniques, Narcotics-Terrorism and Anti-Police Threats. 

Officer Deberry was a member of Northside United Methodist Church and volunteered at Women's Rape Assistance Program. He was a member of the Faternal Order of Police and served as Vice President for Tennessee Youth Association for Retarded Children and Adults.

Officer Deberry was a graduate of Jackson High School and he later attended Lambuth College and the University of Tennessee.

Officer James William Deberry retired from the Jackson Police Department May 16, 2003.
